Asia Argento, born in Rome to a household that includes actors and directors, pursued both professions. In 1985 she made her acting debut in Sergio Citti's Sogni e bisogni. In 1988, she played the leading role in Cristina Comencini's debut film, Zoo (1988), and also was part of the cast of The Church (1989), directed by Michele Soavi. In 1989, she was Nanni Moretti's (also directed) daughter in Red Wood Pigeon. It was in Close Friends (1992), written and directed by Michele Placido, that Asia's career really took off and she could move on from playing very young girls into larger, more sophisticated roles. Cannes International Film Festival received the film well. The film, Trauma (1993), she was the first to work with her father, well-known Italian horror director Dario Argento (her mother is among the most beloved actors of Argento, Daria Nicolodi, playing an anorexic girl in search for her parents' killer. The Phantom of the Opera is her third film together with the director's father. The others are Trauma as well as The Stendhal Syndrome.
